How do I create an account?
Open the app and tap "Get Started." You can sign up with your email address and a password, or use Apple Sign In for one-tap account creation.
How does transcription work?
When you finish recording, your audio is uploaded to our secure cloud pipeline. OpenAI's Whisper model transcribes the speech to text, and GPT-4o-mini generates a brief summary. This usually takes a few seconds to a couple of minutes depending on memo length.
What is speaker identification?
Gray Matter can identify different speakers in your recordings. To set it up, go to Profile & Settings and train the app on your voice (and optionally other voices). The app uses Pyannote.ai to label who said what in multi-speaker recordings.
How does search work?
Gray Matter uses semantic search powered by Google Gemini. Instead of matching exact keywords, it understands the meaning of your query. So searching "that idea about pricing" will find the right memo even if you never said the word "pricing" exactly.
Is my data private?
Yes. Your data is isolated by user ID, stored on encrypted servers, and never sold or used to train AI models. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Profile & Settings > Delete Account. This permanently and immediately deletes all your audio recordings, voice profiles, transcriptions, summaries, embeddings, and your account. This action cannot be undone.
What iOS version is required?
Gray Matter requires iOS 17 or later.
Is the app free?
Yes, Gray Matter is free to download and use.
My transcription seems inaccurate — what can I do?
Transcription accuracy depends on audio quality. For best results: speak clearly, minimize background noise, and hold the phone's microphone close. If you're in a noisy environment, consider using headphones with a built-in microphone.
The app is stuck processing — what should I do?
Processing depends on our cloud pipeline (Firebase, OpenAI, Google AI, Pyannote.ai). If a memo is stuck:
- Check your internet connection
- Close and reopen the app
- If the issue persists after 10 minutes, email us at support@mattlsmith.com with the approximate time of the recording
Can I export my data?
If you'd like a copy of your data in a portable format, email us at support@mattlsmith.com and we'll provide it within 30 days.
